I'm making a 60" self bow for my next door neighbors son, and ran myself into a question....

Do I keep all the dimensions (grip, tip width, etc.) the same as a full size longbow, or do I have to scale everything down?

He's an average sized kid, wiry, and 8 years old. What kind of draw weight should I be shooting for? I can't really tap the kid for information, since it's a surprise birthday gift.
Tough question. Don't know that I have the answer. I would guess 25 to 30 # fer a 8 year old, but thats just a guess!!! He will have to move up to 35# to be able to hunt in most states.
Limb width? You can tiller by removin wood offin the belly or the sides of the limbs, or both. The main thing ya need to know is his draw length. Maybe 25 to 26". Maybe ya should look at some youth bows first. I think Three Rivers offers some youth bows in their catalog.

TheWildCat

Thanks, brother.

I think you and me are the only ones left around here, these days...
As per my advice that as per the height and the age of the child you need to decide the size of the bow and the weight, adjust it accordingly.
Well, that is something that can only be explained after this initial attempt of yours to make him a bow. Let him decide whether the dimensions are correct or not. After some days, ask the neighbors kid, how the bow is and whether he would like it more if it was small or big. Ask for more details so that you could give more attention to detail next time! Anyway, good luck with the bow and your good heart!
