Fletcher, I've been meaning to ask you. That chundo, is it something that you can pick up at a lumberyard up there or do you have to cut your own? Just wondering.

I get a USFS pole permit to cut a bunch of fire killed or bug killed Lodgepole. Then I peel and dry a little more and cut them up on a band saw. I make a centering jig to try to keep my grain lines straight.

So far I have used them for Rendezvous tent and teepee poles, but getting ready to try some 'chundo' shafts since Port Orford cedar is getting so spendy.
gotcha.

Yep, that's why I don't shoot cedar anymore. That and the fact that I can get Douglas Fir at any lumberyard around here. I like Sitka Spruce also but that's about as easy to get here as Chundo.

AWSOME Info Indeed!! Thank You for Sharing!! The Lee Valley Looks to be within My Piddly Price Range, Meaning "Not Out Of My Reach"!! I Hope!

Remember, that tool in the first post makes 3/8" dowels. One thing I've found with it it does leave a rough finish. I have the router tool to send it into for a finish pass that brings it to size and cleans it up alot. I sand it a little and they are usually good to go.

I just found out a couple days ago that Roy and a buddy from another site worked with Lee Valley on developing a set of arrow making bushings for their more expensive model. It just appeared in their new catolog this month. Personally, I'm saving my pennies for that baby. For about $230 I can make my own precision 11/32 shafts. For about $300 I can make just about any arrow shaft I want from 5/16-23/64.

Kinda pricy, but if you buy some Douglas fir shafts for yourself and a couple kids or the Mrs, well, it can add up fast. Might be worth going in on it with a couple buddies.
